Super Bowl Game Day DWI Enforcement

On Sunday, February 5th, in conjunction with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Super Bowl Impaired Driving Prevention Campaign, the College Station Police Department will have additional officers on duty to be on the look out for intoxicated drivers.  In an effort to ensure the safety of our traveling public, these officers will focus on DWI enforcement.  According to recent data released by Mothers Against Drunk Driving “drunk driving remains the primary threat to American families on our roadways.”  If you plan on drinking, please designate a sober driver.

MYTHS AND FACTS ABOUT ALCOHOL AND DRUNK DRIVING

Myth:   Coffee can sober up someone who has had too much to drink.

Fact:   Only time sobers. It takes about one hour to metabolize each drink.

Myth:   Hard liquor is more intoxicating than beer or wine.

Fact:   A 12-ounce can of beer, a five-ounce glass of wine, and a 12-ounce wine cooler contain the same amount of alcohol and the same intoxication potential as an ounce-and-a-half of liquor.

Myth:   Someone who has had too much to drink will look intoxicated.

Fact:    Someone's physical appearance can be misleading. One drink can impair someone's ability to drive. Judgment is the first thing affected when someone has been drinking and important motor skills are next.

STATISTICS -   www.madd.org/statistics

  • This year, over 10,200 people will die in drunk-driving crashes – one every 50 minutes.
  • One in three people will be involved in an alcohol related crash in their lifetime
  • Every minute, one person is injured from an alcohol related crash
  • 50-70% of convicted drunk drivers continue to drive on a suspended license
  • Car crashes are the leading cause of death for teens and one out of three of those is alcohol related
  • Drunk driving costs each adult in this country almost $500 per year
  • Texas ranks 49thin the US (with 1 being the best) as far as alcohol related traffic deaths in 2010

HOW TO SPOT A DRUNKEN DRIVER

These warning signs should be your signal to take down a license plate number and vehicle description in order to report it to the proper authorities. Do not attempt to stop the vehicle.

  • Wide turns
  • Straddling lanes or driving on the center line
  • Drifting or moving in a straight line at a slight angle to the roadway
  • Driving with headlights off at night
  • Appearing to be drunk (i.e., eye fixation, face close to windshield, drinking in the vehicle)
  • Driving below the speed limit
  • Erratic braking or stopping without cause
  • Slow response to traffic signals (sudden stop, delayed start)
  • Nearly striking an object, curb, etc.
  • Weaving or zigzagging across the road
  • Driving on the wrong side of the road or completely off the roadway
  • Tailgating
  • Accelerating or decelerating rapidly

The safety of our community does not have borders.  It is the goal of every law enforcement agency to protect the citizens that we serve.  Be the eyes and ears of your police department.  When you see suspicious activity contact the College Station Police Department at 979-764-3600 or the Texas A&M University Police Department at 979-845-2345; contact the Bryan Police Department or the Brazos County Sheriff’s Office at 979-361-3888.  Together we can make a difference in our community.

Brazos Valley Museum of Natural History Educator's Showcase

The Brazos Valley Museum of Natural History celebrates science education by hosting its fourth annual Educator’s Showcase, February 10 - 24, 2012. This short-term exhibit will provide information from organizations that offer free and low cost materials and resources for teachers, with an emphasis on environmental, science, and history education, with no cost to educators in and around the Brazos County. This year’s showcase is proud to be sponsored once again by the Barbara Bush Literacy Corps.

“The Museum’s commitment to scientific and cultural literacy remains a key aspect of our mission and we strive to do all we can to assist local educators at every level with their efforts to enhance classroom learning in these areas. We hope this annual event will provide a forum for networking and for the exchange of valuable information about the exciting and meaningful supplemental materials, curricula, and other resources available in our area for use in the classroom,” explains Maria Lazo, the Museum’s Associate Director and Education Coordinator.

In conjunction with the Showcase, the Museum is offering a Climate Change, Wildlife and Wildlands: Toolkit for Formal and Informal Educators Teacher’s Workshop, a curriculum developed by seven federal agencies: U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, National Park Service, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, National Aeronautics and Space Administration, Forest Service of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, and Bureau of Land Management. The workshop provides classroom teachers and informal educators with the tools to educate middle school students about the science of climate change, its impacts on U.S. wildlife and wildlands, and what kids can do to help address the issue. Activities for students are based upon 11 eco-region case studies, and incorporate science, social science, math, language arts, and art. Developed by master teachers in the Albert Einstein Fellowship Program, the activities are fun, educational, and easily adapted to a variety of settings and ability levels. Advanced registration is required to attend this workshop and is free to the first 15 registrants. Enroll by calling Maria Lazo at the Museum 979-776-2195

Babies of the Brazos fundraising event benefiting the Children’s Miracle Network of the Brazos Valley

On March 15, 2012 we will be hosting our first annual Babies of the Brazos fundraising event benefiting the Children’s Miracle Network of the Brazos Valley at the College Station Hilton. As many of you know this has been a dream of ours since our daughter Kiera passed away in April of 2007. With the help of events like this many children like Kiera have been saved.

The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at St. Joseph’s Hospital works around the clock to care for these sick babies and their families. This event will help give them the necessary tools to do so. This year they have an extensive list of needed equipment and our goal is to help them purchase every item.

We are asking for your support this year on behalf of all the babies that will come into the NICU. Please help us give them a fighting chance. We believe in CMN and the work they do, keeping 100% of all funds raised right here, in the Brazos Valley. They are working hard to meet the needs of local children and families. Tickets go on sale February 15, 2012 and will be $25 per person.

Doors open at 6pm, and dinner will be served at 6:30. We are also very excited about our auction that ends the night, going from 7:30 to 8:00 pm.  Come ready to have a great time and support our local children!

The Salvation Army Food Pantry

Open four days a week (Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, 9:00-11:30 AM) it is not unusual to see clients lining up outside, well before the doors open.  The Salvation Army provides food boxes containing non-perishable food items, bread and meat to an average of 150 people each week.  Staff and volunteers re-stock every Tuesday, with 9,000-11,000 pounds of supplies delivered weekly by the Brazos Valley Food Bank.  Baby items including diapers, pull-ups and formula are always in demand as are hygiene products such as razors, toothpaste and toothbrushes.  Lt. Joe Contreras, Salvation Army Officer in Bryan College Station, is ready to step-up to the challenge of the increased demand from the community. He said, “The Salvation Army will continue to serve as many people as possible in Brazos County. In addition to the Food Pantry we are also open each afternoon, from 12:00 Noon until 4:00 PM as a Cooling Station, providing water and a snack to people seeking shelter from the sweltering heat.”

The Salvation Army, located at 2506 Cavitt Ave, is accepting donations of canned goods, baby items and hygiene products. For more information about the services at The Salvation Army please call (979) 361-0618.
